Blender Basics Guide

First step into the world of Blender: Interface, Basic Tools and Shortcuts.

To avoid getting lost in Blender, you must know how to use your mouse:

  • Orbit: Click and drag with the middle mouse button (wheel).
  • Pan: Shift + Hold middle mouse button and drag.
  • Zoom: Scroll the mouse wheel.
  • Select Object: Left click.

The holy trinity of modeling:

  • G (Grab/Move): Moves the object.
  • R (Rotate): Rotates the object.
  • S (Scale): Scales the object.
  • Axis Locking: After pressing a key (e.g., G), press X, Y, or Z to restrict movement to that specific axis.

There are two main worlds in Blender, and you switch between them using the Tab key:

  • Object Mode: You see the object as a whole. Used for placing a box from one place to another.
  • Edit Mode: You go down to the object's atoms (vertex, edge, face). You need to enter here to turn a box into a pipe.

While in Edit Mode, keys 1, 2, and 3 at the top of your keyboard change your selection:

  • 1: Vertex Selection.
  • 2: Edge Selection.
  • 3: Face Selection.
  • X or Delete: Opens the delete menu.
  • Shift + A: Opens the add new object menu.
  • Ctrl + Z: Undo.
  • F3: Search menu (Type the name if you forgot a command).
